COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Medical-Surgical Nursing I focus on nursing practice with adults experiencing a wide range of acute and chronic alterations in health. Medical Surgical Nursing I is the first course of a 2 quarter sequence. Health promotion strategies and health care principles are examined with an emphasis on: fluid and electrolyte imbalances, acid-base imbalances; endocrine system disorders; musculoskeletal and neurological disorders; care of the patient with integumentary disorders and peri-operative care is addressed including:  surgical procedures, pre-operative care, post-operative care, aseptic technique, and complications associated with surgery.  Community resources are discussed.

Emphasis is placed on holistic understanding of the cultural, psychosocial, and spiritual needs of the individual adult and family. Nurse accountability, adult and family psycho-social development and care, cognitive development, Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, cultural diversity, spiritual and psychological needs, and the art of caring behaviors by the nurse are integrated throughout the course. End of life care [palliative and hospice] will also be explored, including ethical, legal, and socio-cultural concerns.  Care of the adult and family and family life processes and adaptation are discussed. Pharmacology is emphasized.  Application of the nursing process occurs throughout this course.  Lab and clinical experiences in providing patient care and documentation of care given are integrated throughout this course; which includes practicing basic wound care skills.   Prerequisites:  PNU 101 and PNU 102

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

At the completion of the course the student will be able to:

  1. Compare the four primary types of acid-base imbalance.
  2. Describe the cause and effect of deficits and excesses of sodium, potassium, chloride, calcium, magnesium, phosphorous, and bicarbonate.
  3. Discuss the factors that influence an individual's ability to tolerate surgery.
  4. Describe the nurses role in educating the patient pre and postoperatively.
  5. Discuss populations at risk for complications related to surgery.
    1. Perform patient teaching regarding patients with musculoskeletal disorders.
    2. Demonstrate competence with devices used to prevent complications of immobility.

TEACHING STRATEGIES: Lecture, discussion, group-activities, brainstorming, concept mapping, concept presentation, writing assignments, case studies to foster clarification and beginning critical thinking and problem solving skills, Skills Lab experiences and selected clinical experiences.

GRADING SCALE: Final grades are given in letters. A minimum final grade of “C” or 78% must be achieved in every academic course. Final grade of satisfactory is required in every   lab and clinical course for progression.
